Outpatient Coding Supervisor

Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm. Mon-Thurs will be onsite and Fridays will be remote

Job Summary:

The Outpatient Coding Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the outpatient coding team, ensuring accurate and timely assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes in compliance with regulatory guidelines and organizational standards. This role provides leadership, training, and support to coding staff while monitoring productivity and quality performance.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of outpatient coding staff, including assigning workloads and monitoring performance.

  • Review coded outpatient records (e.g., same-day surgeries, ED visits, ancillary services) for accuracy and compliance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.

  • Ensure timely and accurate coding to support appropriate reimbursement and minimize claim denials.

  • Provide ongoing training, education, and guidance to coding staff on changes in regulations, payer policies, and coding best practices.

  • Conduct routine coding audits and quality reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with CMS, HIPAA, and facility policies.

  • Collaborate with other departments including billing, compliance, and clinical documentation improvement (CDI) teams to resolve coding issues and discrepancies.

  • Maintain current knowledge of outpatient coding guidelines, updates, and industry trends.

  • Assist in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions of outpatient coding staff as needed.

  • Prepare and present coding productivity and quality reports to leadership.


Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred

  • RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC certification required

  • Minimum 3–5 years of outpatient coding experience; at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead role preferred

  • Proficient in outpatient coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills
